Which sewing machine is best for beginners in the UAE?
For most beginners, the best first machine is a simple home sewing machine from Janome or Brother. Choose one with easy threading, a drop-in bobbin, speed control and a few basic stitches. You do not need hundreds of stitches or an industrial machine to learn.

This guide is about your first machine. If you sew for a shop or a business, our sewing machine buyer's guide covers industrial, overlock and embroidery machines.
What should a beginner look for in a sewing machine?
A good first machine is easy to set up and easy to control. These features help most in your first weeks:
- Threading should be easy. An automatic needle threader helps a lot.
- A drop-in bobbin with a clear cover lets you see when the thread runs low.
- A speed slider lets you set a slow top speed while you learn.
- Four stitches cover almost every job: straight stitch, zigzag, blind hem and stretch stitch.
- A one-step buttonhole makes shirts and children's clothes easier to finish.
- A heavier machine stays still on the table. A lighter one is easier to carry to a class.
Which features can a beginner skip?
Long feature lists look good in a shop, but you will not use most of them in your first year. You can skip these for now:
- Hundreds of decorative stitches. Most people use the same few stitches for years.
- Embroidery functions. Embroidery is a separate skill, and often a separate machine.
- Large touchscreens and phone apps.
- Many special presser feet that you do not know how to use yet.
Put your money into a well-built machine instead. Very cheap machines often have thread tension problems, and these problems make learning harder.
Mechanical or computerized: which is better for a beginner?
Both work well for a first machine. The main difference is how you choose and set the stitch.
| Feature | Mechanical | Computerized |
|---|---|---|
| How you set stitches | Dials and knobs | Buttons and a small screen |
| Number of stitches | Fewer, the basics | More choices |
| Buttonhole | Often a few steps | Often one step |
| Settings | You set them by hand | Machine sets many for you |
| Good for | Learning how stitches work | Fast, easy stitch choice |
A mechanical machine has fewer parts that can go wrong. It also teaches you how stitch length and tension work. A computerized machine sets more of this for you. Choose the one that feels easier when you look at the controls.
Which brands are good for beginners?
We suggest Janome or Brother for a first machine. Both are Japanese brands with simple home machines and clear controls.
Janome is known for smooth and quiet home machines. Brother home machines often have easy threading and a drop-in bobbin. See our Janome sewing machines and Brother sewing machines, or the short list of beginner sewing machines.
How do you start on your new machine?
- Read the manual once. Learn to thread the machine and wind the bobbin. Most beginner problems come from wrong threading.
- Sew straight lines on scrap fabric before you cut good fabric.
- Keep spare needles. A new needle of the right type fixes many stitch problems.
- Sew a little and often. Short practice every few days works better than one long session.
- Clean the machine often. Our sewing machine maintenance tips for beginners explain the basics.
Frequently asked questions
Can I learn to sew on an industrial machine?
You can, but it is harder. Industrial machines run much faster than home machines. A home machine is easier to control while you learn.
Can I sew an abaya on a beginner machine?
Yes. A home sewing machine can sew abayas for you and your family. If you plan to sew abayas every day to sell, look at an industrial machine and an overlocker.
Can I pay in instalments?
You can pay in 4 with Tabby, with no interest. Tabby is available at checkout.
Do you deliver to my emirate?
Yes, we deliver to all 7 emirates. Home machines are delivered free to Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman on orders of AED 1,500 or more, and for AED 30 below that. Other emirates pay a fee, which you see at checkout. You can also collect your order free from our location in Sharjah Industrial Area 4.
What if my machine stops working?
Every machine has a one-year warranty. If a home sewing machine you bought from us breaks in the first year, bring it to our location in Sharjah Industrial Area 4 and we fix it there. Sorry, after the first year we cannot repair home sewing machines.
Which needle should I use?
Use a needle made for your fabric. For example, use a ballpoint needle for knit fabric like T-shirts. Change the needle when stitches skip or the needle is bent.
